The process of improving the volume of traffic to a website from a search engine using “natural” search results is known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Sites that receive the most visitors do so because they sit earlier or higher on the search results list. Image search, local search and industry-specific vertical search engines are types of search that SEO targets.

In order to use SEO as an Internet marketing strategy, a website is optimized by editing content, HTML and associated coding in order to increase relevance to chosen keywords. In order for SEO to be effective, SEO tactics are often incorporated into the design and development of a website. In these cases, “search engine friendly” optimization methods are used within the menus, images, content management systems and other elements, all with the intention of maintaining a high position on a search engine list.

The major search engines, Google and Yahoo! find pages for their algorithmic search results using programs called crawlers which search the internet in a methodical, automated way. Yahoo! amongst other search engines have a paid system, whereby crawling is guaranteed for a fee. Google offers a different service, Webmaster Tools. With this, an XML Sitemap can be created for free, which guarantees that pages are found.

Various studies have gone into SEO as a marketing strategy. Studies into eye tracking show that as searchers look at a results page, they scan from top to bottom, left to right. Therefore, a place at the top of the results page significantly increases visitors to a site. Whilst a great strategy for some, SEO is not appropriate for all websites. A successful marketing campaign requires quality web pages that are persuasive and engaging, often using paid advertising or analytic programs which useful in enabling site owners to view their successes.

There are two major categories of SEO techniques. These can simply be defined as those that are acceptable and those that are not approved by search engines. The effect of unacceptable techniques is minimised by search engines. Within the industry, these methods are classified as white hat SEO and black hat SEO. Results that last a long time are generated by white hats. On the contrary, when discovered, black hats result in sites being temporarily or permanently banned. If the SEO technique conforms to the guidelines of the search engine and involves no deception, it is generally considered to be white hat. White hats usually aim to create content for users that is easily accessible, rather than tricking the system to suit its purpose, as a black hat does.

There are very few large markets where Google is not the dominant search engine. Even when not the leader, it is usually second only to a local engine. This is most relevant in the Far East, Russia and Czech Republic. In order to gain success in the international market, a professional translation is often required, along with web hosting using a local IP address and a domain registered on the top level of the target market. With these factors in check, the advantages of SEO are essentially the same.

Essentially it is more than possible for a relatively technical person to perform Search Engine Optimisation themselves. However the process is time consuming. Allowing an SEO specialist like Pagehog to do this work for you can free up far more time for you and let you spend your time doing what you are good at, running your business and making money.
